BC Liberals lay out plan to create 10,000 new child care spaces

VANCOUVER (October 20, 2020) – As part of their plan to dramatically increase access to affordable child care for parents, the BC Liberals have committed to building an additional 10,000 new child care spaces all across British Columbia.

“Parents throughout B.C. have been calling for greater access to safe, reliable child care services,” said Joan Isaacs, BC Liberal candidate for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain. “We’ve listened to parents and, today, we are announcing our commitment to build an additional 10,000 new child care spaces throughout the province.”

Today’s $100 million announcement builds on the BC Liberals promise to implement a real $10-a-day child care plan for low-income families and offer more affordable child care for families who need it most.

The BC Liberal plan will also expand training and support needed to get better qualified child care workers and make it easier to find spaces through the creation of a province-wide, online application system.

“John Horgan and the NDP have completely failed to deliver on their 2017 child care plan and they continue to try and bribe voters with fake promises this election,” added Petra Veintimilla, BC Liberal candidate for Boundary-Similkameen. “We have a fully-costed plan, we will fund 10,000 new spaces on top of what the NDP have already promised and will make sure those who need affordable child care actually get it.”

Under the BC Liberal plan, families with annual household incomes up to $65,000 will have access to $10-a-day child care and there will be stepped rates for families with incomes up to $125,000.
