Ending the NDP’s big union handout

The NDP-Green coalition has given a handful of politically friendly unions a monopoly on big provincial construction projects:

This blatant political payback to the NDP’s biggest donors means that 85% of BC construction workers – those who belong to the wrong union, or no union at all – don’t get to work on these projects. And taxpayers are on the hook for billions of dollars in extra costs:

  • The cost of the Illecillewaet four-laning project on Highway 1, the first contract awarded under the NDP’s union benefits agreement, is facing a 35% cost overrun – an additional cost of $11,000 for every metre of road.
  • The Pattullo Bridge replacement is estimated to be at least $100 million over budget – with no additional lanes.
  • Based on this trend, planned SkyTrain expansion could cost at least an extra $1 billion.
  • According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), the NDP’s union benefit agreements could add an additional $4.8 billion in additional labour costs to the province’s current capital budget – or $3,996 for a family of four.

With all that money going straight into the pockets of John Horgan’s friends, some projects like the George Massey Tunnel replacement won’t get built for years…if ever.

BC can do so much better.

A BC Liberal government led by Andrew Wilkinson will end the NDP’s overpriced deals with their union buddies and stand up for fair deals on construction, supporting the rights of construction workers to belong to whatever union they choose, or no union at all.

We successfully blocked the NDP from scrapping the secret ballot for union drives – but there’s a lot more work to do.

Equal pay for women

According to Statistics Canada, women on average make just 87 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. This translates into 47 full days of work in a year that women go unpaid for the same amount of work. And BC is one of the worst-performing provinces in Canada when it comes to pay equity.

This needs to change.

That’s why the BC Liberals have put forward legislation to ensure transparency in pay scales for both women and men – and put an end to unequal pay.

The NDP have refused to bring the bill to a vote, and John Horgan even dismissed it as a “political stunt”.

BC can do so much better.

A BC Liberal government led by Andrew Wilkinson will fight to make sure that women and men get equal pay for equal work.

That’s what Opportunity for all of BC is all about.

Get Trans Mountain built

According to one opinion survey after another, a huge majority of British Columbians support the Trans-Mountain Expansion Project – yet the NDP-Green coalition is determined to stop it.

They’ve already spent millions of taxpayer dollars fighting the project in court, and they’ve been laughed out of court every time.

British Columbians pay the highest gas prices anywhere in North America – and one of the biggest reasons is low pipeline capacity on the West Coast. This also means that more oil travels through BC by rail – putting communities at risk every single day.

While the federal government and courts are backing the Trans Mountain project, radical activists have made clear they’re not giving up their fight – even if they have to break the law.

The NDP mayor of Vancouver, Kennedy Stewart, and Green Party leader Elizabeth May have already been arrested for blocking construction work in violation of a court order.

BC can do so much better.

A BC Liberal government led by Andrew Wilkinson will support building the TMX pipeline to provide you with a secure, affordable, and reliable fuel supply.

That’s what Opportunity for all of BC is all about.

And if John Horgan wants to fight this pipeline all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada – then the NDP, not BC taxpayers, should foot the bill.

Standing up for BC resource industries

The NDP-Green coalition has totally failed the resource industries that are the bedrock of our economy, leaving Interior and Northern communities adrift in the face of serious threats to our way of life.

Look no further than their botched mountain caribou plan, a string of devastating mill closures, and obstruction of safe, much-needed pipelines.

The crisis in forestry is especially urgent:

  • 150 weeks of mill closures to date
  • 39 communities affected and many more indirectly impacted
  • 1.7 billion board feet of production lost and counting
  • 125 thousand tonnes of pulp production lost and counting
  • 10 mills closed or shutdown indefinitely (4 closed, 6 indefinite)
  • Over 6,000 direct jobs impacted by curtailments/closures/shift reductions
  • 56 individual plant locations affected

Concrete solutions put forward by the BC Liberals have been ignored or delayed by an NDP government that just doesn’t seem to care.

BC can do so much better.

A BC Liberal government led by Andrew Wilkinson will stand up proudly for BC’s resource industries. We are the only party standing up for rural BC, and the way of life that the NDP have written off and walked away from.

That’s what Opportunity for all of BC is all about.

Real, practical action to protect our environment

The NDP-Green coalition’s approach to the environment is simple: talk a big game, raise taxes as much as possible, and shut down every industry they can.

The result is anything but positive for the environment we all care about protecting:

  • Only 15% of carbon tax revenue is going towards clean energy programs – turning this tax into just another government cash grab.
  • Taxes and red tape are threatening BC’s ability to develop innovative, high-tech solutions to the climate change challenge.
  • Our forest industry is threatened with a total shutdown in huge parts of the province, thanks to the NDP’s deeply flawed approach to caribou protection.
  • Thanks to NDP mismanagement, BC is falling behind on its goals to transition to hybrid and electric vehicles.

We’re not going to solve climate change and other environmental challenges by wrecking our standard of living, or keeping the rest of the world in poverty.

Our natural resources like LNG are part of the solution – not the problem. That’s what the NDP and Greens don’t understand.

BC can do so much better.

A BC Liberal government led by Andrew Wilkinson will focus on clean air and water, get serious about protecting wildlife like our wild salmon, and position BC to lead the global charge on clean energy.
