The Facts on the BC Energy Plan

April 11, 2009

The NDP, big labour and funded lobbying groups continue to spread dishonesty about the BC Liberal Energy Plan.  For example, in a recent letter from Rafe Mair on behalf of a group called "Save Our Rivers" he makes patently false statements that government is privatizing BC Hydro, privatizing rivers, and that under NAFTA this will result in the export of bulk water to the U.S. as well as a loss of control over electricity exports. The NDP are echoing these claims.

This is simply dishonest and irresponsible.  Here are the facts:

  • BC Hydro always has been and will continue to be publicly owned. The BC Liberal government passed legislation ensuring it remains public and by 2010 will have backed that commitment with nearly $9 billion in new investment into BC Hydro since 2001.
  • All rivers and streams in B.C. continue to be publicly owned. Legislation passed by the BC Liberal government actually put a 40-year limit on water licenses, while under the NDP these licenses were awarded in perpetuity. There are over 290,000 streams in the province and only 0.03 per cent are impacted by run-of-river projects.
  • NAFTA has no effect on the government's authority to regulate its water resources or determining whether or not to issue water licenses. It was the BC Liberal Government that passed legislation to ban bulk water sales.
  • In terms of exports, nothing has changed in BC Hydro's ability to import and export power when needed, and in fact it was the NDP's lack of investment in new power during the 1990s that led B.C. to become a net importer of U.S. power just to keep the lights on.
What the Energy Policy does provide is an opportunity to make our province energy self-sufficient by 2016, meeting half of that through conservation and the other half through generating new, clean energy in the province. This will come from new BC Hydro investments and expansions as well as innovative contributions from the independent, clean power production sector that is not only supplying power but also billions in investment and thousands of new jobs.

The NDP and their allies like Rafe Mair continue to spread misinformation in spite of the facts. That is simply reckless and irresponsible.
Because Every Fact Matters – Campaign In Review
This week, we take a look back at some of the most egregious examples of NDP dishonesty, spin and outright fabrications from the 2009 provincial election campaign.
NDP Attack Former NDP Premier
The NDP’s news release on TransLink Board members reached a new level of dishonesty today – even for the NDP. The NDP’s claim that the board and their compensation level was chosen by the BC Liberals is 100 per cent false. The board’s compensation level and membership was actually recommended by former NDP premier Mike Harcourt
NDP spin can't hide truth
In trying to spin the leaders’ debate, the NDP again resorted to dishonesty in their post-debate news release and continued their campaign of misinformation.
Because Every Fact Matters – Week 3
As a service to those who think that the facts matter when it comes to important issues regarding the future of our province, here is a summary of some of the facts that Carole James and the NDP just got plain wrong last week. * We apologize in advance for the record-setting length of this edition, but this was a record-setting week for NDP errors.
NDP Attacks on Local Police Show Disrespect, Lack of Leadership on Crime
Recent comments made by NDP Abbotsford South candidate Bonnie Rai attacking the integrity of Abbotsford police demonstrates not only disrespect for community law enforcement but a complete lack of leadership from the NDP on crime that Carole James must account for, says Solicitor General and Fort Langley-Aldergrove BC Liberal candidate Rich Coleman.
NDP Continues Campaign of Dishonesty with Burnaby Seniors
Carole James and the NDP continued their campaign of dishonesty by stating funding for the Burnaby Partners in Seniors Wellness program was discontinued by the Fraser Health Authority on April 1st of this year. That is simply untrue.
NDP Minimum Wage Spin has Minimum Credibility
Today, NDP leader Carole James again demonstrated she doesn’t have even a basic understanding of B.C.’s economy. Rather than announcing policies to support workers, James continued to promote a reckless economic plan that will destroy jobs.
Stop the Smears – NDP Put Politics Ahead of Seniors Care
Carole James’ announcement today that the NDP will keep Cowichan Lodge open and place residents there within six months is the height of recklessness and dishonesty, and proves the NDP are willing to put political gain ahead of seniors’ care.
NDP Trading in Dishonesty on Trades and Apprentices
Today Carole James took her tour of dishonesty to Surrey where she spread misinformation about trades and apprentices in B.C. The NDP claim they support apprentices but let’s look at the real record:
Because Every Fact Matters – Week 2
When the NDP speaks, it always seems the facts are the first thing to go.
Stop the Smears - NDP Mislead Renters at Rally
Today the NDP held a rally where they falsely claimed the BC Liberals are not protecting renters.
NDP Spin on Low-Income Support Dishonest
Combating poverty in our communities is a serious discussion requiring a serious response. That’s why it is so disappointing that NDP leader Carole James has again released an inaccurate and misleading attack on the topic, claiming poverty and child poverty rates are getting worse in British Columbia.
Carole James Still Dishonest About Seniors Care Beds
Carole James is simply being dishonest when she says that the BC Liberals have not met their New Era Commitment to build an additional, “5000 new intermediate and long term care beds”.
Carole James Dishonest with B.C. Seniors
Carole James took her campaign of dishonesty to Surrey and Burnaby today where she claimed that the number of seniors care beds has declined and that home care and support services have been cut. These allegations are patently dishonest.
Because Every Fact Matters – Week 1
When the NDP speaks, it always seems the facts are the first thing to go.
NDP's P3 Spin Misleading and Destructive
Today NDP leader Carole James was caught deliberately misleading British Columbians on the true value of public-private partnerships. Once again, she has her facts completely wrong.
Dissecting the NDP's "Truth" on Power
The NDP have released another error-ridden, factually suspect and simply dishonest analysis on clean energy policy, posing it as the “truth.”
NDP In Denial About Disastrous 1990s
Today, the NDP sunk to a new level of dishonesty by trying to claim that B.C.’s economy actually performed well in the 1990s.
