The NDP’s latest “Reality Check” attempts to spin reality by claiming that a tax on carbon emissions is not an effective tool in fighting climate change, and that the NDP has a better plan. But here are the facts:
- Under the former NDP government, Greenhouse Gas emissions increased by 24 per cent. They produced multiple plans to address climate change while in power, but like their fiscal management plans they did not deliver on a single one.
- Climate experts internationally agree a carbon tax is a key component to an effective climate change strategy. This includes contributors to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that recently won a Nobel Prize.
- Independent analysis has found that B.C.’s carbon tax will reduce GHG emissions by 3 million tonnes – the equivalent of taking nearly 800,000 cars off the road.
- The NDP’s plan has already been slammed by B.C.’s leading environmental groups, who described their approach as “economically irresponsible” and “stepping backwards” in the fight against climate change.
- This follows research released by noted Simon Fraser University professor Marc Jaccard, who predicts that up to 60,000 jobs would be killed by the NDP climate plan.
- Carole James says her plan is like that of Barack Obama. Ms. James is no Obama.
