April 15, 2009We could easily point out that the CCPA is a NDP research group – in fact the previous NDP government used your hard earned tax dollars to fund the CCPA. But it makes more sense to just state the facts:
- Spending on seniors care in BC is at its highest levels ever – approximately $2.3B today – up 44% since 2001. And it will grow higher as part of the $4.8 billion in new funding we are putting into health care by 2011.
- We have exceeded our commitment to build 5,000 net new seniors beds – with 5,896 net new beds today, and replaced 6,500 more. These are the same numbers that health authorities are reporting. The NDP only added around 1,400 during their tenure.
- We make no apologies that we have added assisted living and supportive housing to the continuum of care so we can meet the needs of ALL of our seniors. This is a proven health policy approach that the NDP actually established near the end of their mandate.
- The proof of the improvement in seniors care is a dramatic reduction in wait times to access care beds – from up to 1 year in 2001 to 15-90 days today. 62% of residential care clients pay the lowest rate for care - $30.90, one of the lowest rates in all of Canada.
- We’ve also increased the number of people receiving home support by 14% over the last four years alone. The NDP cut the number of clients receiving home support by 31% between 1994 and 2001. 71% of home support clients pay no fees at all for the service.
Simply put, the CCPA’s report is more political than factual and families deserve to know the facts.
