The Truth on Legal Aid: NDP Guilty of Misrepresenting the Facts

The verdict is in -- the NDP continue to misrepresent the facts on key issues. Today, the NDP claims that government support for legal aid is being cut despite the fact that the Society itself has already said that is not true. Here are the real facts:

  • Government funding to the Legal Services Society has not been reduced. In fact, in 2008/09 funding civil and family legal aid services increased by nearly $3 million -- to $65.3 million this year, compared to $62.46 million in 2007/08.
  • Funding for legal aid has actually increased every year for the past four years.
  • On top of legal aid services, government spends another $29 million annually on services to help British Columbians resolve legal issues and access justice services.
