April 16, 2009Carole James and the NDP launched another completely dishonest attack on the tax on carbon emissions today. James claimed the tax on carbon emissions doesn’t work, and that it doesn’t cut greenhouse gas emissions. Here are the facts:
- Greenhouse Gas emissions data for 2008 has not even been released yet. In fact, emissions data for 2008 will not be released until the spring of 2010.
- Independent experts have confirmed that the tax on carbon emissions will reduce emissions by an estimated three million tonnes - the equivalent of taking nearly 800,000 cars off the road.
- Leading economists and scientists agree that a revenue-neutral carbon tax is a critical and necessary tool in the move to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- The BC Climate Action Team, which included 9 world leaders in climate sciences, also confirmed that the tax on carbon emissions is “simply the most effective instrument available that will, over time, support and encourage the shift we must make to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.”
- Leading environmental groups, including the David Suzuki Foundation, the Pembina Institute and ForestEthics have said that the NDP’s plan to “axe the gas tax is an irresponsible recipe to axe the green future B.C. is now building.”
- Noted Simon Fraser University professor Marc Jaccard has also analyzed the NDP climate plan. He noted that it would kill up to 60,000 jobs, primarily in rural communities.
The BC Liberal Plan will take nearly 800,000 cars off the road. The NDP plan will kill 60,000 jobs. You decide which you agree with.
