SURREY – A BC Liberal government will ensure every worker who contributes to construction of new, major public structures in British Columbia is permanently recognized for building the infrastructure that keeps B.C. strong, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.
“The same spirit that has built our province for the past 150 years is alive in the architects, designers, welders, carpenters, steelworkers and others who build the infrastructure of our province and are truly B.C.’s unsung heroes,” said Premier Campbell. “Every day B.C.’s workers are leaving a legacy that will benefit us, our children and our grandchildren. They deserve to be commemorated in a way that will endure as long as the structures they build.”
Plaques listing the name of every worker involved in projects across the province – such as the Port Mann Bridge, Pitt River Bridge and Surrey Outpatient Hospital – will be installed at the completed project for all British Columbians and visitors to B.C. to see.
Workers will be named on a voluntary basis and in co-operation with unions, contractors and project partners.
“We have a plan to build the B.C. economy, create jobs and bring new investment and opportunity to the province,” said Premier Campbell. “The projects these workers build improve our competitiveness and ensure we can seize the opportunities in trade and tourism that are vital to the future of B.C.”
The BC Liberals are investing $14 billion over three years in infrastructure projects to create up to 88,000 jobs in communities across the province.
