West Vancouver – Premier Gordon Campbell was joined by representatives of VANOC and the Government of Canada today to unveil the route for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, which will begin and end here in British Columbia.
“The Olympic Flame is a powerful symbol of the hope, optimism and pride Canadians feel as we count down to hosting the world for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” said Premier Gordon Campbell. “The relay is an incredible opportunity to showcase the unique character of our nation and our communities, and to unite everyone in cheering on our athletes.”
In October of next year the Olympic flame will arrive in British Columbia, kicking off a 106-day torch relay that will connect all Canadians to the spirit and excitement of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The British Columbia leg of the relay will be 27 days over 9,750 kilometres. About 3,500 British Columbians will carry the torch through 266 B.C. communities and places of interest, including 50 First Nation communities. About 92 per cent of the provincial population will be within one hour’s drive of the relay route.
The relay begins in Victoria on October 30, 2009 and will return to BC Place Stadium on February 12, 2010 to light the flame for the Games.
