Scholarship to Honour Stan Hagen
COURTENAY – A new $105,000 scholarship at North Island College in memory of Agriculture and Lands Minister and Comox Valley MLA Stan Hagen will carry on the legacy of a dedicated and caring public servant, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.
“Throughout his years in public service, Stan Hagen was passionate about helping young people reach their full potential,” said Premier Campbell. “This scholarship will help to ensure that Stan’s legacy of caring for youth and for education carries on for years to come.”
The Province of British Columbia is contributing $35,000, the North Island College Foundation is contributing $35,000 and Western Forest Products, International Forest Products and TmberWest Forest Corp are contributing a further $35,000 to the Stanley B. Hagen Scholarship at North Island College.
“Stan Hagen was a strong voice for advanced education and for North Island College,” said Dr. Lou Dryden, president of North Island College. “By creating this scholarship in his memory, we can honour his contributions in perpetuity to building our community and our province.”
“British Columbians were fortunate to have a caring public servant and supporter of the forest industry like Stan Hagen,” said Rick Jeffery, CEO of Coast Forest Products Association. “We are honoured to partner in this scholarship in memory of a strong advocate for the communities and people of the coast.”
The scholarship funding will be held in trust by the North Island College Foundation, with the interest generated going to fund two annual scholarships equivalent to a year of full-time tuition at North Island College.
“Investing in our province’s best students by providing scholarships for their education is a fitting tribute to a friend and colleague who devoted decades of his life to serving British Columbians,” said Advanced Education and Labour Market Development Minister Murray Coell. “Stan would be proud to see that his legacy lives on in North Island College.”
Stan Hagen served as minister in 10 ministries between 1986 and 2009, including Education; Advanced Education; Tourism, Sport and the Arts; and Children and Family Development.
