Fact Finder to Look into B.C. College of Teachers
VICTORIA – A fact finder has been engaged to review and report on the functioning of the B.C. College of Teachers in fulfilling its mandate under the Teaching Profession Act, Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid announced today.
“I received a request from the college council, including the council chair, requesting provincial assistance in reviewing the B.C. College of Teachers to ensure it is operating as mandated,” said MacDiarmid. “As a result of this request, I have engaged Don Avison as a fact finder to meet with the college council and stakeholder groups and report back to me.”
The request to review the B.C. College of Teachers was signed by the majority of council members, including both elected and appointed members. This request has also been supported by the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils, the B.C. School Trustees Association, the Federation of Independent School Associations, the B.C. School Superintendents’ Association, and the B.C. Principals’ and Vice Principals’ Association.
The Ministry of Education has engaged Victoria lawyer Don Avison to consult with the B.C. College of Teachers council and stakeholders, and examine the functioning of the college in fulfilling its mandate under the Teaching Profession Act. Avison is the former president of the Research Universities Council of B.C. and has also held senior positions at the federal, territorial and provincial level. He was deputy minister in several B.C. ministries, including Education.
Avison will report to the Minister of Education with conclusions and recommendations by Sept. 17, 2010.
