- Women

Where we are today:

A record number of women are participating in B.C.’s economy, with more than one million women working in B.C.  The median weekly wage for women has grown at nearly twice the rate of men’s since 2001. The Province has significantly increased support for women facing abusive situations, including prevention and intervention initiatives, 24/7 transition house services, counselling and outreach.

Challenges and Opportunities:

There will be more opportunities for women to participate in the B.C. economy in the future, with about a million new job openings being created over the next 12 years. We’ve increased child care spaces and provided child care subsidies for low-income families. Still, it can be difficult for women who want to enter the workforce to find child care.

Discussion:

Child care options are an important component in ensuring women can participate in the workforce - what other supports can government provide to ensure women have unfettered access to job opportunities in B.C.? How can government better address women’s health issues such as breast cancer?
