- Seniors

Where we are today:

Over 11,300 new or replacement seniors care beds have been built across B.C. since 2001. Residential care rates have been frozen for 72 per cent of users, and average wait times for residential care have been reduced from one year to less than 90 days. Low-income seniors receive monthly support through the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters program and the Seniors’ Supplement. Home care services have been expanded by 24 per cent since 2001.

Challenges and Opportunities:

Our population is aging. Currently, about 14 per cent of B.C.’s population is 65 or older. By 2030, that is expected to grow to about 25 per cent. This demographic shift will put more pressure on our health care system and seniors facilities. However, with new treatments and longer life-spans, there will be many more seniors who will want to work and remain independent longer than before.

Discussion:

What supports can government provide to help seniors live as independently as possible and enjoy the best quality of life? Can government play a role in helping British Columbians prepare for their retirement and supporting themselves independently later into their lives?
