More than one quarter of British Columbians were born outside Canada, and more than 40,000 new immigrants arrive in B.C. every year. To support new immigrants, B.C. introduced WelcomeBC, a comprehensive approach to enhance settlement and integration services to help newcomers. Programs to help skilled immigrants such as the Provincial Nominee Program and Skill Connect for Immigrants have been expanded.
Challenges and Opportunities:
B.C.’s cultural diversity is one of our province’s greatest strengths. Immigration is vital to our continued economic and social growth, and for meeting the growing need for skilled workers. Over one million new jobs are expected over the next 12 years, but with only 650,000 students currently in B.C. schools, immigration will be critical to meeting that demand.
Discussion:
How can the government streamline the process for skilled immigrants to come to British Columbia, while maintaining consistent standards for professions like doctor, nurse, teacher, etc.? What supports can we put in place to ensure new arrivals have the opportunities and resources they need to quickly adapt to their new home? What efforts should government make to assist resident British Columbians in better understanding the challenges of our immigrants?
