Idea Posted By: Doug Eastwood Last Edited: Jun 10, 2012 About MeA lawyer and Whitecaps enthusiast! My IdeaImplement mandatory school uniforms for elementary and middle school students in BC RationaleThere are a number of reasons to support school uniforms for public schools in B.C. (they are already widely worn in Catholic schools and private schools throughout Canada): 1) School uniforms save the average family money; 2) School uniforms level social status and avoid cliches; 3) School uniforms create a sense of community; 4) School uniforms increase a sense of focus and discipline; and 5) School uniforms improve student safety by allowing staff and parents to see if any unauthorized individuals are on school grounds or interacting with students. ImpactThis is a bold initiative and would certainly have its detractors. However, in a multi-cultural society like B.C. this would help create a sense of unity and community among both students and parents--school uniforms are common in Asia and Europe. WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THIS IDEA It's a very good idea. Our children are in private school. In addition to the advantages above it eliminates arguments at home over clothes, in particular, inappropriate teenage clothing. I think its great that someone raised this. I think it would be worth at least trying out as a pilot project perhaps on a voluntary basis (maybe parents could be asked to vote if they wanted their school to switch). Since I moved to Canada I've always wondered why school children didn't wear uniforms to school. It is just a given in Australia. I think BC could lead the way with this and I think it would be popular with parents. Even my kids liked the idea when I asked them! Each school board could adopt their own colour polo shirt and/or sweater. I hope this idea makes it to the convention floor as I would certainly support it. I think this idea is good but we have to think what the students want. Being a high school student, I know there are different cliches and those happen, not because of the clothes we are but how we act, what we like etc. School uniforms are just boring in my opinion and coming to school dressed in your comfortable, stylish, black, whatever color clothes makes you unique! From a policy perspective I think this is the kind of concrete and straight forward idea that people would be willing to support in an election. This should be a school board issue - not a provincial government issue. Having said that, I would support the idea fully. How about dress slacks (no jeans - especially those with holes) and a shirt with a collar for guys, and for the girls skirt and blouse (not sleeveless) or a dress. No more t-shirts with pictures or slogans. Jun 26, 2012 REPLY | LEAVE A COMMENT REPLY CANCEL You have successfully posted your comment. This should be up to individual school and school boards. BC is too culturally diverse for this to work across the country.Kids will naturally look for fashion items that highlight their status over others. I remember hearing about how in some places where uniforms required mandatory polo shits... the wealthier kids would go then and buy expensive polo shirts to differentiate from their other pupils who couldn't afford them. If uniforms are brought in, they should be standardized and (affordable) for all families.Overall though BC is a very individualist society and uniforms are just not in demand like they are in many other countries. There could be tremendous cultural opposition to the idea. Jul 03, 2012 REPLY | LEAVE A COMMENT REPLY CANCEL You have successfully posted your comment.
