Experience as Leader of the Official Opposition

In 1991, the NDP were elected government in B.C.  Despite campaigning on a commitment not to raise taxes, the NDP broke their promise and increased taxes by more then $2 billion. Outraged by the NDP’s massive tax increases, Mr. Campbell organized anti-tax rallies in Vancouver, where he gathered thousands of signatures protesting the NDP’s tax hikes. By May of 1993, Mr. Campbell could no longer tolerate the NDP’s billion-dollar tax increases, huge deficit budgets and the damage they were inflicting on the provincial economy. Mr. Campbell sought and won the leadership of the BC Liberal Party.

As leader of the BC Liberals, Mr. Campbell travelled extensively meeting with British Columbians in every corner of the province consolidating support for the BC Liberal party.  His efforts paid off in the 2001 election. Mr. Campbell and the BC Liberals won the largest majority in the province’s history.
