Another Personal Attack by NDP's Leonard Krog

May 15, 2005

Nanaimo – "Parasites who must hate their grandchildren" is the latest personal attack directed at the BC Liberals by NDP Candidate Leonard Krog.  Nanaimo BC Liberal candidate Mike Hunter says Krog’s comments are outrageous.

In the May 12th edition of the Gabriola Sounder newspaper, Krog was quoted speaking to a local audience calling BC Liberals "rascals", "home-wreckers", and "parasites who must hate their grandchildren".

"Leonard Krog is proving himself unsuitable and unfit to represent the people of Nanaimo and Gabriola Island," said Hunter. "His comments are extremely insulting and hurtful."

Earlier this week, Krog said "I doubt Christ would be a Republican or Liberal".  Though he was initially unrepentant for the comment, he was forced to apologize by NDP Leader Carole James.  Hunter says Krog's comments show a disturbing pattern.

"There is simply no excuse for these types of hateful attacks," said Hunter.  "Leonard Krog has a demonstrated track record of attacking those who don’t share his doctrinaire views and has a distinct lack of respect for people who he would seek to represent."

On Saturday’s Global TV News, Carole James stated: "I've been very clear that I don't support personal attacks", in response to a Mission Teachers’'Union calendar that had derogatory depictions of the Premier and the local BC Liberal candidate Randy Hawes.  Hunter says it's apparent that Carole James is not holding her own candidates to the same standard.

"On the one hand, Carole James says she doesn’t support personal attacks but then she lets her candidates have free reign to make hateful comments that have no place in the public arena," said Hunter.  "It's a reminder that this is the same old NDP.  The people of Nanaimo deserve something better – they deserve a strong voice in government."
