The Real Story on Hospital Cleanliness

May 11, 2005

The NDP has launched an attack on cleaning standards at Burnaby Hospital and the Fraser Health Authority.

  • We have established tough new cleaning standards that hold hospital cleaners to the highest standards:
    • The Fraser Health Authority has its Housekeeping Auditing Program modeled on the Australian and UK National Standards of Cleanliness for Health Care Facilities.
    • Audits are routinely and randomly conducted at 12 acute care hospitals and at 3 extended care facilities with no advance notice.
    • The overall cleaning standard has been consistently met and is exceeding target at many health care sites right across the Fraser Health Authority’s region. This means there is a cleaner environment for patients and staff.
  • Housekeeping Audit Results for Burnaby Hospital show that cleaning standards have been met or exceeded the highest target standards for 10 of the last 13 reporting periods over the last year.
  • These results are reported publicly and are available for everyone to see. Go to http://www.fraserhealth.ca/News/Announcements/Housekeeping.htm
  • The cleaning standards that Fraser Health Authority sets for the contractor holds them accountable for providing at the highest level of cleaning for “protection of the patient and resident.”
  • The Fraser Health Authority’s contract with Sodexho will save taxpayers more than $50 million over five years – which all goes back into patient care.
  • This is another desperate attempt by the NDP to whip up fear about our health care system – it’s another reminder that this is the same old NDP that has no plan and no new ideas for health care.
