- Early Learning

Where we are today:

The B.C. Liberal government is establishing 400 StrongStart BC centers across the province, offering free early learning programs to families.  We’ve also established an Early Childhood Learning Agency (ECLA) to assess the feasibility and costs of providing full-day kindergarten for five-year olds and providing parents the choice of full day kindergarten for four-year olds and three-year olds.

Challenges and Opportunities:

One in four children enters kindergarten not developmentally ready to start school. Preparing children for school earlier gives them a head start in learning and can translate into better educational results. At the same time, every family is unique and we want to give parents choices and options about how government can best support their families in those early years.

Discussion:

How much emphasis should be put on “care” versus “education” when it comes to services for families with small children? Are there other ways government can support parents to ensure children are prepared for school?  How important would full-day kindergarten for five-year-olds be to improving learning? What about kindergarten for four and three-year-olds?
