VICTORIA – Local artists and cultural organizations across B.C. have been awarded more than $5.5 million in BC Arts Council grants, announced Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Stan Hagen.
This recent round of BC Arts Council grants were awarded to support a variety of arts and culture organizations from a range of artistic disciplines, including music, visual arts, literature, theatre and dance. As well, grants were given to support public museums and to assist individual artists throughout B.C.
“Sustaining an active arts and culture community is at the heart of our vibrant and robust society,” said Hagen. “Strong, creative communities are known to draw tourism, business and industry, creating job opportunities and additional wealth to our province.”
The British Columbia Arts Council is the Province’s primary agency for supporting arts and culture programs in B.C. In the 2005/2006 budget, the annual funding to the BC Arts Council was increased by $3 million to $13.95 million.
“Arts and culture play an essential role in defining us as a society,” said Hagen. “Through BC Arts Council grants, individuals and organizations across the province will have the support they need to grow and foster new creative opportunities.”
To date, the BC Arts Council has provided over $144 million in funding to assist artists and arts and cultural organizations throughout the province. For more information on the British Columbia Arts Council, visit www.bcartscouncil.ca.
