VICTORIA – Premier Gordon Campbell released the following statement today on the passing of Ernest "Smokey" Smith, Canada’s last recipient of the Victoria Cross:
"There are people who the lens of history magnifies to something larger than life, and there are people like Ernest "Smokey" Smith – a man whose true story rivalled that of any legend. His bravery on that night in Italy nearly 61 years ago earned him the Victoria Cross and the enduring gratitude of an admiring nation. But his life was far more than that one night and was defined by a long legacy of service to his country and his fellow soldiers.
"Smokey Smith exemplified the courage and dedication of all those who fought on behalf of Canada throughout our proud military history. But, despite the horrors he had witnessed in war, he never lost his enthusiasm for family, community and the simpler things in life. He was an outspoken, passionate Canadian who defended his country with courage and dedication.
"We are fortunate to have had men like Smokey Smith when Canada needed them most, we were blessed to have had him stay with us for so long, and I know all British Columbians join me in marking his passing with sadness and gratitude. May a man who gave so much in times of war now rest in unending peace."
Smith was the last surviving Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross for military bravery. He was one of five British Columbians and the only Canadian private to receive the Victoria Cross in World War II. He also received the Order of B.C. in 2002.
