DELTA – The BC Liberal government, the Corporation of Delta and Alpha Aviation Inc. have committed more than $12.7 million to improve Boundary Bay Airport announced Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon, Delta South MLA Val Roddick and Alpha Aviation chairman Fred Kaiser today.
“Partnerships are an excellent way to leverage a series of investments into major improvements at community airports,” said Falcon. “Boundary Bay is already attracting new tenants, creating more aerospace jobs and reaching new markets.”
“I have been closely involved with this project for quite some time and I’m pleased to see it moving forward," said Roddick. "It shows that working together is good for business and good for Delta.”
Alpha Aviation Inc. has made an $11-million commitment to infrastructure development at Boundary Bay Airport. Alpha has completed a master plan that will see the airport grow its role serving corporate aviation and aerospace activities, while continuing to be the focal point for general aviation and flight training in the lower mainland.
The Province is providing $613,000 from the Small Community Airport Capital Rehabilitation Fund. Part of the $60-million Transportation Partnerships Program, the funds will help restore the eastern end of Runway 07-25, extending the runway from 1, 079 metres (3,540 feet) to 1,524 metres (5,000 feet). The Corporation of Delta will allocate $1.1 million to upgrade 80th Street into the airport.
Concurrent to the funding announcement, Heli One, a division of Vancouver-based CHC Helicopter Corporation, has selected Boundary Bay Airport as the site of its new $30-million maintenance and overhaul facility. The 19,695 square metre (212,000 sq. ft.) facility will provide engine overhaul and maintenance services both to CHC’s fleet and to provide contract services for other helicopter operators around the world.
Boundary Bay Airport is the fifth busiest airport in Canada. The facility is used largely for general aviation and flight training. Delta assumed ownership of Boundary Bay Airport from Transport Canada in 1997 and transferred operational responsibility for the airport to Alpha Aviation in December 2004.
